What you will study

  • Applied Strength & Conditioning Principles 1 - Performance Measurement: In this module, you’ll learn key testing, profiling and monitoring strategies used in Strength and Conditioning. You’ll develop skills in data collection and analysis for different athletes and sports.
  • Applied Strength & Conditioning Principles 2 - Program Design & Implementation: In this module, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of periodisation and its foundational principles. You'll explore various training modalities, including strength, power, and speed, and learn how to apply acute and chronic programming principles effectively. The module will also enhance your problem-solving skills in Strength and Conditioning (S&C) implementation, enabling you to develop and prescribe tailored programmes for athletes.
  • Coaching & Professional Practice: In this module, you'll critically evaluate the knowledge and skills essential for Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coaching. You'll delve into coaching pedagogy and reflective practices, enhancing your ability to deliver effective S&C programmes. The module will guide you in developing a personal coaching philosophy and provide opportunities to engage in diverse coaching experiences, fostering both personal and professional growth. 
  • Placement: In this module, you'll undertake a Strength and Conditioning (S&C) placement with an internal or external partner, providing practical experience in the field. This module serves as a foundation for the subsequent project module, ensuring a seamless transition from practical experience to academic application.
  • Data Management & Handling: In this module, you'll learn to select appropriate data collection methods for Strength and Conditioning (S&C) and master techniques for organising, storing, and handling data.
  • Strength Training Exercise Physiological Principles: In this module, you'll explore the physiological foundations of Strength and Conditioning (S&C) practices, linking specific physiological mechanisms to various training solutions. The module aims to enhance your understanding of exercise physiology, enabling you to design evidence-based S&C interventions and programmes grounded in physiological principles.
  • Dissertation: This module enhances students’ ability to conduct independent research and encourages critical evaluation of existing literature and methods fostering the ability to identify gaps, contradictions and areas for further investigation.
  • Research Practice and Examination in Sport & Exercise Science: This module provides students with an advanced understanding of the key principles and theoretical foundations of various research methodologies used in sport and equip students with practical skills in designing, conducting, and analysing research, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches.

Entry requirements & applying

The entry requirements for this programme are 2:2 or above in any undergraduate degree. 

International entry qualifications are outlined on the UK National Information Centre for global qualifications and skills (UK ENIC) as equivalent to the relevant UK entry qualification. 

In addition to the academic entry requirements, all applicants whose first language is not English or Welsh must demonstrate English language proficiency.  

All applicants successful in being offered a place on the programmes will be subject to a satisfactory DBS clearance undertaken by Wrexham University. 

A DBS may be required for the placement component of the programme where the placement involves regulated activity working with vulnerable Children and/or Adults. This will be checked as part of the placement process, identifying where required, the appropriate type and level of DBS. Where required, the relevant DBS will be conducted prior to commencement on the placement. The type and level of DBS check required will be confirmed to you during the DBS application process.

Failure to declare a conviction, which is subsequently revealed by a DBS check may result in exclusion from the programme. The nature of declared convictions is taken into consideration following our Consideration of Criminal Convictions Policy & Procedure. In line with the Universities Disciplinary Procedure for Students, all students are required to disclose a criminal record acquired during the student’s enrolment with the University.

 

Teaching & Assessment

Our MSc in Strength and Conditioning offers a dynamic learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. Students will engage in interactive lectures, seminars, and hands-on workshops to develop a deep understanding of S&C principles. Benefit from a mandatory 150-hour placement, applying your skills in real-world settings under the guidance of qualified professionals. Practical skills will be evaluated through in-class assessments, presentations and potentially video or in-person analysis of coaching techniques. Critical thinking and self-reflection will be fostered through assignments requiring analysis of research or case studies, as well as reflective writing exercises. This program is designed to equip you with the expertise and experience needed for a successful career in Strength and Conditioning.
