Ex-Armed Forces
At Wrexham Glyndŵr University, we highly value the skills and experiences that service leavers bring to the University.
We can provide you with the appropriate support and guidance to ensure that your transition into higher education - and civilian life - is an easy one.
As ex-armed forces personnel, we recognise that your background may be quite different to that of an 18 year old school leaver who is entering university through the traditional route.
Entry requirements vary by course, and whilst any formal qualifications that you have will be taken into consideration, we understand that you are also likely to have acquired a wide variety of transferable skills throughout your forces career which are still invaluable in the civilian world.
At Wrexham Glyndŵr University, all applicants are assessed on individual merit, so we will also look at relevant skills and experience when considering your application. Your personal statement also gives you an opportunity to highlight how your experiences will add value to your study, as well as showcase your willingness and enthusiasm to gain your degree and be a part of the University.
Access routes
Depending on your situation and the course you wish to study, you may want to consider looking at different access routes, such as a Higher Education Access course or one of our foundation year degrees.
The Access Diploma is taught at colleges all around the UK, in a variety of subject areas. The Diploma can usually be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
If you have non-traditional qualifications, want to study a subject that is new to you or have had a break from education and wish to return, a foundation year will provide you with an opportunity to access a full honours degree. Our foundation programmes are typically four-years long, allowing you an additional year to gain the skills and knowledge that are needed for degree level study.
If you’re not sure which route is best for you at the stage you’re currently at, then why not contact our enquiries team who can discuss your options with you. If there isn’t a suitable foundation year option with us, then we’ll point you in the direction of a local college and let you know which course might be best for you.
Financing your studies
If you are returning to education, you may still be able to apply for student finance, in the form of a student loan. The amount you get will depend on your family situation and the type of course you wish to study. You may be able to get extra help if you have children. For more information please visit our fees and funding pages.
ELCAS
As a service leaver, you may be entitled to funding under the Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS). This MOD-supported scheme promotes lifelong learning amongst current and ex-members of the Armed Forces, and is designed to help you with the cost of higher-level learning by providing you with financial support in the form of a single up-front payment each year, for a maximum of three years. You can find more information on the ELCAS website.
