A Day in the Life of a Physiotherapy Student

Hi, my name is Matt, and I am a Physiotherapy student at Wrexham University. I chose to study Physiotherapy as it is so varied and there are many different options that you can choose to work in once qualified including Musculoskeletal, Cardiorespiratory, Neurological Physiotherapy, and much more. Hopefully, this short blog will provide you with a bit of an idea into what life is really like as a physiotherapy student.

Morning

I try to get up and ready as soon as possible during the theory elements of my course. Normally, around 8.30am, I complete all my pre-reading for the lectures and complete any revision that needs to be done. When I am attending lectures, I try to ensure that I arrive to my lecture room around 15 minutes before the scheduled start time as this ensures that I can be ready for the lecture and get the most out of it.

Currently, we are studying ‘Developing Cardiorespiratory Practice’ which I am finding particularly interesting as we are using lots of simulation equipment such as a stethoscope to practice listening to chests as well as Respiratory assessment. Each lecture/seminar lasts approximately 2.5 hours, and, on some days, we can have two a day.

Afternoon

Lunch for me really depends on the day, however generally I will bring a packed lunch to campus and eat it in many of the great lunch spots we have here on the Wrexham Plas Coch campus, whether it is the Pods located in the Quad or Glyn’s bar in the Students’ Union.

During the afternoon as a physio student, we have another 2.5-hour lecture where we look deeper into concepts learned earlier in the morning, helping us to really embed our understanding of the key concepts.

Evening

After uni has finished, most days you will find me on our International standard hockey pitch here at Wrexham, whether that be taking part in one of the sports teams here at Wrexham - more specifically, the hockey team - or in the Gym at our conveniently located sports centre right at the heart of our campus.

After this, I usually make an evening meal which varies from day to day but my go to at the moment is spag bol!

That is then my day pretty much done; life as a physiotherapy student is so varied!

Why study Physiotherapy at Wrexham University?

Studying Physiotherapy here at Wrexham University is one of the best choices of my life. The course itself is really enjoyable and, due to the small class sizes, you are known as a name and not a number. Also, the lecturers really get to know your learning needs and how they can best support you. As well as this, we have some really great facilities from our Physiotherapy Suite to our Healthcare Simulation Centre. I am really looking forward to continuing studying here.
