Exploring Welsh Language Opportunities in Speech and Language Therapy

The Welsh language holds a unique and vital role in delivering inclusive and culturally sensitive speech and language therapy across Wales.

Ffion Roberts, one of our experienced Speech and Language Therapy Lecturers, shares her insight into the opportunities and importance of incorporating Welsh into their practice. In this blog, discover how embracing bilingualism can make a profound difference in supporting clients and shaping the future of this healthcare profession.

A Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) degree at Wrexham University is a recent addition to North Wales, with a strong focus on the Welsh language, bilingualism, and cultural competence. This course equips graduates with the knowledge to provide inclusive and culturally appropriate care to Welsh-speaking clients, by integrating Welsh language skills into their education.

Welsh-speaking lecturers, who are also qualified SALTs, play a key role in delivering Welsh-medium content, offering modules in Welsh, and inspiring students to develop their Welsh language abilities. Importantly, our Welsh-speaking students are not only able to converse with patients in the language but also deliver specialist interventions, highlighting the significance of bilingualism in professional practice.

Clinical placements in Welsh-speaking communities across North Wales immerse our students in real-world bilingual settings, allowing them to refine their Welsh language skills and gain firsthand experience in providing bilingual therapy services. These placements foster an understanding of the cultural and linguistic dynamics critical to effective communication and accessible healthcare.

By embracing Welsh language opportunities during their studies, SALT students are well-prepared to meet the linguistic demands of their future careers, particularly in bilingual contexts. This focus on bilingualism not only enhances career prospects but also contributes to preserving the Welsh language and ensures meaningful care for Welsh-speaking clients.
