Considering Postgraduate Study
Thinking about going back into education? It may have been years since your undergraduate studies or you may now be coming to the end of your degree and looking to go down the postgraduate route.
Whatever the situation, there are lots of things to consider before you take the plunge into postgraduate study. It’s a big commitment and it’s important to do your research before deciding to take the next big step.
First things first, consider why you want to do a postgraduate degree – do you want to improve your knowledge, become a specialist in your subject or want to improve your job prospects? If you think doing a postgraduate degree will improve the chances of you getting a particular job at the end of it, make sure you check – call an employer you could possibly see yourself working for and ask them if the course you are looking to do will make you more employable.
Think about where you want to do the course, study mode and how many contact hours there are, as you may be juggling family life or work with your studies.
Also, will you be able to afford it? Some universities like us here at Wrexham University offer scholarships for students who have done their undergraduate studies with us. There is also lots of information on our website about what financial help is available for postgraduate students.
The best thing to do if you are thinking about postgraduate study is come to one of our open evenings. We hold postgraduate, professional and part-time study open evenings throughout the year, which give prospective students the chance to go along and talk about the subject(s) you are interested in and speak to lecturers face-to-face. You will learn more about the programme, the way you will study and the way you will be assessed, as well as what you can expect when you study here.
There will be support services available to talk about any other concerns you might have about postgraduate study – from financing it, to careers and employability advice. We also have current students on hand to answer questions about the University and for them to tell you what it’s like to study here first hand.
