This module has been designed to align with the NMC SPQ Standards (NMC 2022). The module provides the foundations for the development of a competent, accountable practitioner who will question their actions and decisions when providing care.

You will:

  • Access our modern campus house, Ty Dysgu, to undertake simulated learning, allowing you to gain deep insights into real world scenarios and engage with your peers in a safe learning environment similar to what you would encounter in clinical practice.
  • Consider the holistic requirements of caring for a patient in their own home, alongside the needs of the carers.
  • Gain an understanding of risk management such as lone working, unpredictability and safeguarding.
  • Explore the possibility of referrals to wider services/agencies within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Consider your professional judgement such as accountability, autonomy, advocacy, inclusion anti-discriminatory practice, consent and confidentiality.

Key course features

  • Designed in alignment with the NMC (2022) SPQ standards
  • During this course, you will work in small groups to undertake a group presentation, acknowledging current evidence-based practice to underpin your clinical decisions
  • Provides a unique opportunity to undertake Level 7 study prior to embarking on a Level 7 study programme – building confidence in academic ability.
  • Provides opportunity for progression to the SPQ programme as successful completion will enable the RPL of credits into the SPQ programme following successful application and interview
  • Delivery is for 8 consecutive weeks - Wednesday mornings 09.30-12.30 hrs with a date for assessment provided from the outset
  • Funding can be sourced for this module for those working in a community setting within BCUHB and Powys LHB.

The Fundamentals of Community Nursing contains the following indicative syllabus:

  • Emotional intelligence 
  • Personal health and wellbeing 
  • Literacy, numeracy, digital and technical skills 
  • Conversational Welsh language 

The essence of this module is to learn through simulation and to apply the indicative syllabus above to your simulation scenariosYou will learn through case scenarios and open discussion and will apply evidence-based practice to your clinical decisions. 

Entry requirements & applying

Applicants must be NMC registered nurses with current professional registration

Teaching & Assessment

WU adopt an Active Learning Framework (ALF) approach to teaching and learning.  This means that students are actively involved in learning, and teaching is provided in a variety of formats drawing on the greatest learning potential.   

With this in mind, the teaching team adopt a blended learning approach through a range of methodologies such as simulation, recorded lecturers, discussion forums, quizzes, case studies, group tasks, key readings, reflection and necessary learning activity will be available on the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment on a weekly basis. 

There is an expected 20 hours of teaching and 80 hours of guided independent study.  

Formative assessments:

  1. Multiple choice questions via MS Forms on conversational Welsh language within community nursing.  
  2. Simulation scenario based on a clinical home visit, followed by reflection and simulation debrief.   

Summative assessment:  

Digital Group Presentation of the outcomes of a simulated scenario you have encountered within your capacity as a student within the field of community nursing. You will be marked on your individual contribution and as a collective group. Equal weighting will be given when marking your individual contribution and your participation in the collective group work.
