Fundamentals of community nursing (SCPHN) Is a new course that has been designed to align with the new NMC SCPHN standards (NMC 2022 updated 2024). When taken as a standalone module, has the potential to the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme on successful application and interview process and being offered a place on the course
The module aims to introduce students to the context of specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) when working with people in their own homes and within the wider community. The student will be introduced to the proficiencies for leading autonomous SCPHN practice through exposure to a range of both facilitator and student led case-based scenarios and simulation.
The module will enable students to explore and apply relevant, legal, regulatory governance and policies to practice considering both global and UK policy and devolved Welsh legislature and policy.
Additionally, the student will reflect on their prior experience and skills examining how these inform and impact on future compassionate leadership, team working an problem solving in SCPHN practice.
During this module the student will be undertaking authentic simulations in the community house “Ty Dysgu”. In groups you will be involved in the live simulation, but also in the direct observation which will be visually projected into the classroom setting. This is facilitated by Wrexham University Simulation Team.
Key course features

- Provides a unique opportunity to undertake Level 7 study prior to embarking on a Level 7 study programme – building confidence in academic ability.
- Provides opportunity for progression to the SCPHN programme as successful completion will enable the RPEL of credits into the SCPHN programme following successful application and interview.
- Delivery is for 8 consecutive weeks - Wednesday mornings 0930 – 12:30 with a date for assessment provided from the onset.
- We adopt a blended learning approach through a range of methodologies such as recorded lecturers, discussion forums, quizzes, case studies, group tasks, key readings, reflection and necessary learning activity will be available on the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment on a weekly basis.

What you will study
Fundamentals of Community Nursing (SCPHN) contains the following indicative syllabus:
- Personal health and wellbeing during the SCPHN programme
- Reflection of prior experience values and beliefs
- Emotional intelligence
- Introduction to compassionate leadership
- Political and social-economic drivers within health and social care
- Devolved Welsh legislation and policy
- Sustainable development goals
- Health as a fundamental human right
- Concepts and determinants of health Equality and diversity and inclusion recognising stigma and bias
- Practising safely in home and community situations
- Introduction to safeguarding
- Introduction to caseload working, referrals and transfers on health vising and school nursing
- Accountability and autonomy in SCPHN
- Assessing capacity, consent and maintaining confidentiality
- Cultural competence and anti-discriminatory practice
The essence of this module is to learn through simulation and to apply the indicative syllabus above to your simulation scenarios. Students will learn through case scenarios and open discussion and will apply evidence-based practice to their clinical decisions.
Entry requirements & applying
Students will be NMC registered nurses (Level 1) or midwives with current professional registration.
Teaching & Assessment
WU adopt an Active Learning Framework (ALF) approach to teaching and learning. This means that students are actively involved in learning and teaching is provided in a variety of formats drawing on the greatest learning potential.
This module will be delivered via a ‘blended learning’ approach. Directed study tasks, which may include activities such as recorded lectures, discussion forums, quizzes, case studies, simulations and group tasks, key readings, reflective activities, or other appropriate learning activities, will be made available on the Virtual Learning Environment. There will be some shared learning with SPQ students.
The Flipped classroom approach will be utilised as far as possible to maximise the learning opportunities during synchronous sessions. Timetabled ‘live’ seminars/ sessions may be held (either in a physical classroom or via an online platform), to facilitate discussion and debate and support students to progress with their learning. These will be recorded when appropriate and made available on the VLE, encouraging deep learning by enabling content to be revisited and reflected upon at a time suitable for the student.
Formative assessment:
- Multiple choice questions via MS Forms on conversational Welsh language within community and specialist community public health nursing.
- Group work: Simulation scenario in the home or school that prompts group reflection on the following key concepts: analysis of referral or prior information / use of professional judgement/inclusion/accountability/autonomy/ advocacy and working safely in the home or school environment
Summative assessment:
Digital group presentation demonstrating the justification, decision making and outcomes reached following a formative simulated SCPHN scenario in their field of SCPHN practice.
