Why choose this course?
The Improving health outcomes through health visiting is a new course that has been designed to align with the new NMC SCPHN standards (NMC 2022 updated 2024).
This module aims to support students to develop an in-depth understanding of the factors influencing human growth and development, including the application of genomics. It will build their ability to work in partnership with families, carers and other professionals, using and evaluating approaches to public health, health promotion, prevention and early intervention in health visiting. Throughout the module students will draw on national public health frameworks to deliver developmental assessment and the early identification of atypical development, ill health or disability.
Within this module the students will:
- Systematically apply advancing knowledge of biopsychosocial development and identity across the life course to the delivery of health visiting assessment and practice for children, parents and families
- Critically evaluate the impact of evidence, legislation and policy in providing a framework to support equitable and positive health outcomes for infants, parents and families
- Work in partnership to systematically communicate, plan and justify health promotion and early health visiting interventions that empower and support children, parents and families
- Critically evaluate family access to culturally sensitive support networks, health visiting and inter agency interventions for children, parents and families including where there is atypical development and/or disability and/or other life changing and vulnerable circumstances
Key course features
The Improving health outcomes through health visiting module;
- Has been designed in alignment with the NMC (2022 updated 2024) SCPHN standards
- Provides a unique opportunity to undertake Level 7 study prior to embarking on a Level 7 study programme – building confidence in academic ability.
- Provides opportunity for progression to the SCPHN programme as successful completion will enable the RPEL of credits into the SCPHN programme following successful application and interview
- Delivery is for 8 consecutive weeks - Wednesday 09.00 – 16:00 hrs with a date for assessment provided from the onset
- We adopt a blended learning approach through a range of methodologies such as recorded lecturers, discussion forums, quizzes, case studies, group tasks, key readings, reflection and necessary learning activity will be available on the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment on a weekly basis.

The Improving health outcomes through health visiting contains the following indicative syllabus
- Biopsychosocial, emotional and moral human development and genomics. Impact on the life course

- Normal and atypical human development and genomics
- Infection control, immunisation programmes.
- Developmental programmes and assessment. Childhood measurement
- Speech and language development
- Childhood ailments, illness and/or disability
- Infant feeding and nutrition. Breast feeding promotion, support and the UNICEF breast feeding initiative
- Promoting family safety
- Parenting and family relationships
- Contraception
- Ante natal care.
- Perinatal and family mental health
- Social prescribing
To capture this content the following subjects have been devised:
- Introduction Biopsychosocial Development: Biopsychosocial theory. Genomics and its impact across the life course. Consider typical vs atypical development
- Health Assessment, Surveillance, and Tools: Introduction and use of validated tools
- Health Literacy and Communication: The principles of health literacy. Communicating effectively with families from diverse backgrounds
- Developmental Assessments and Childhood Health: Developmental programs and childhood measurement. Speech and language development. Common childhood ailments and disabilities.
- Infant Feeding, Nutrition, and Safety: Infant feeding, breastfeeding promotion, and support. UNICEF breastfeeding initiative. Promoting family safety.
- Parenting, Relationships, and Reproductive Health: Parenting and family relationships. Contraception and antenatal care.
- Mental Health and Social Prescribing: Perinatal and family mental health. Social prescribing in health visiting practice.
Entry requirements & applying
Students will be NMC registered nurses (Level 1) or midwives with current professional registration and must be employed within the SCPHN service
Teaching & Assessment
WU adopt an Active Learning Framework (ALF) approach to teaching and learning. This means that students are actively involved in learning and teaching is provided in a variety of formats drawing on the greatest learning potential.
The teaching team adopt a blended learning approach through a range of methodologies such as recorded lecturers, discussion forums, quizzes, case studies, group tasks, key readings, reflection and necessary learning activity will be available on the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment on a weekly basis. There is an expected 40 hours of teaching and 160 hours of guided independent study.
Formative assessment: Students will present a health visiting assessment with a plan for an aspect of health improvement. Presentations will be made to a facilitated peer group with collective formative feedback
Summative assessment is a 4000 word written case study. The case study should be based on the health assessment and planned interventions aimed at reducing risk and improving health for a school aged child or young person. The chosen case study should enable all module learning outcomes to be met.
