Ali Roscoe is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Fine Art and MA Painting programmes at Wrexham University. She studied at Manchester Polytechnic, Sheffield Hallam University, and Liverpool John Moores University, and is currently working on her PhD. She has 25 years of teaching experience, with over 10 years in Higher Education.
Ali's practice-based research focuses on the relationship between material thinking, tactile engagement and the creative process in art practice and alternative pedagogical approaches. Her work is rooted in material thinking, process, and drawing to explore the cross-over spaces between various disciplines and ways of thinking, looking and ‘knowing’. She often combines the disciplines and philosophies of fine art, textiles and 'unorthodox materials' using the drawn line and stitch as metaphors. Her works explore the tensions between psychological states, text and image, pictorial space and real space.
Research Interests
My current research (for my PhD) is an investigation into the relationship between material thinking, tactile engagement and the creative process in fine art practice and is focusing on a group of students at Wrexham School of Art. Working closely with individuals and groups is enabling me to develop ‘pathways’ in which the creativity and knowledge from direct experience can be utilised to become trauma informed.
The research focus is around ‘material thinking’ (the way artists think and learn through doing and making – through the manipulation of materials, media and processes) and investigating this complexity in relationship to student engagement and learning. The research investigates prior learning and experience and how this accelerates or inhibits learning. The research is following a multi-method approach and the main group in the study are students on programme at WSA. Images and textual material from the students’ encounters with the material and instructions are informing a visual taxonomy of practice.
