Karen Griffiths
Principal Lecturer/Professional Lead in Nursing
I started my nursing career many years ago by undertaking the Orthopaedic Nursing Certificate. I then completed general nursing and worked in an acute medical ward as a Staff Nurse. My first Ward Sisters post was in Rheumatology. I then worked in a variety of orthopaedic wards and departments and completed an emergency nurse practitioner course and children’s nursing qualification during this time. After spending a year as a Clinical Placement Facilitator supporting nursing students in placement I moved into higher education as a Lecturer in Children’s Nursing.
I have over 20 years’ experience in higher education supporting pre-registration nursing students. Prior to joining Wrexham University, I was a Senior Lecturer in Children’s Nursing at Staffordshire University with additional responsibilities as Course Lead and Practice Learning Allocation Lead for Children’s Nursing. Being dual trained as an adult and children’s nurse I also contributed to shared modules and adult nursing modules. Since joining Wrexham University as senior lecturer for children's and adult nursing I have been involved in the development of the curriculum undertaken the role of Children's Nursing programme lead until moving to the role of Professional Lead where I now have the overview of Adult, Children's and Mental Health Nursing. I am still involved in teaching, assessing student work, personal tutoring and acting as an Academic Assessor which is a specific role required of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. It gives me great pleasure to see the growth and development of individuals throughout their student nursing journey on the way to becoming qualified nurses.
Teaching interests
I undertake teaching within the pre-registration nursing modules. Sessions include problem based learning facilitation, assisting with clinical skills development and I have a particular interest in transition from student to newly qualified nurse.
