Dr Kirsty Fuller
Lecturer In Primary Education QTS
My name is Kirsty and I am a senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) in Primary Education with QTS and on the Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in Primary Education
My background is in primary education, as a class teacher, subject leader, and school principal. I have taught in both England and North Wales but spent the most significant proportion of my career so far in international schools in Germany. I have worked within culturally and linguistically diverse environments and student-centred contexts with creative, process-driven curricula.
My approach to education maintains an orientation towards education for developing human capacities, including those for compassion, empathy, and care. It also underscores the value of engaging in educational practices which develop students who are critical thinkers, civically engaged citizens, and resilient individuals.
In my doctoral dissertation, I engaged central concepts of cosmopolitanism, liberal education, and Bildung, in considering the transformative possibilities of a normatively driven, cosmopolitan conception of international education. I also considered the roles and responsibilities of educators in upholding and promoting ethical educational practices which centre on the cultivation of humanity and, in the tradition of Bildung, forming the human person. These themes continue to be central to my practice as well as inform my research interests which include the following:
- Cosmopolitanism and Cosmopolitan Education
- Education and social justice
- Liberal education
- Education for citizenship
- A Capability Approach to Education
- International Education
- Culturally responsive pedagogy
- Teacher identity
- Inclusive education
- Anti-Racist practice
