Picture of staff member

I am employed by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health board (BCUHB) as a Consultant Biomedical Scientist and Director of the Maelor Academic Unit of Medical and Surgical Sciences (MAUMSS). I am also affiliated with Wrexham University as a Professor of Biomedical Science.

I am a Fellow member of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), a Chartered Scientist (CSci) registered with the Science Council, and a Biomedical Scientist affiliated with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Amongst my various external activities, I am a specialist portfolio examiner for the IBMS. This role involves assessing the suitability of hospital-based practitioners to practice at a Senior Scientist or Managerial level. I am an IBMS academic accreditation panel member at national level. This role enables me to identify and implement curriculum change to programmes at other Higher Education Institutions (HEI). I have also been Deputy Chief Examiner and member of the IBMS National Transfusion Science committee.

By invitation, I have been external examiner for Keele University (MSc Blood Sciences) and the University of Gloucester (BSc Biomedical Science), having previously performed the same role at Nottingham Trent University and the University of Wolverhampton. I am also a Fellow member of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

I possess a wide range of laboratory experience in the biomedical research and teaching field, and I am skilled in various immuno-haematological and biochemistry techniques. I am dedicated to maintaining high quality standards and have a passion for enhancing the student learning experience. I wish to continue to publish and increase my technical expertise, as well as advancing a professional career in academia and clinical research.

Since it's development in 2021, BCUHB-MAUMSS is the main vehicle for my current research work, which primarily involves investigating patients with benign or malignant disorders of the kidneys, bladder and prostate.

Research Interests

My current research interests are divided into the following areas:

Clinical

•Kidney stones and kidney cancer

• Benign and malignant disorders of the bladder

•Benign and malignant disorders of the prostate

•Clinical outcome measures (e.g. acute kidney injury, infection, bleeding, oedema, blood clots) and their relationship with biomarkers

Scientific

•Leukocyte biology

•Vascular endothelium

•Inflammation

•Metastasis

•Cytokines & adhesion molecules

•Novel biomarkers
