What were you doing before coming to Wrexham University?

I was employed as a Targeted Intervention Youth Worker

What attracted you to Wrexham University?

I was keen to complete a professional qualification in Youth and Community Work and with the excellent reputation for this at Wrexham University, it was the only place I wanted to study!

Tell us a bit about your course

The course was part time, through a hybrid model of face to face and virtual studies. The course was delivered by extremely knowledgeable practicing youth workers who encouraged critical thinking, exploring all aspects of youth and community work, including placements in both the first and second year. The course option I chose was part time over 3 years, incorporating a research project in the final year.

What was the atmosphere like around campus?

The campus is very welcoming and feels a safe, supportive environment to learn in. It is easy to navigate and if you ever feel lost, there are people there to support you through it. Being a mature student, I was worried at first whether I would fit in, but my worries were soon alleviated after I joined my first class. The course tutors, fellow class mates and campus staff made me feel incredibly welcome.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I most enjoyed the experiences we were fortunate enough to be given while studying. We spent over a week on a practice exchange in Finland and then two weeks in Jersey engaging in youth work with fellow students. I was also supported to have my research paper published in an academic journal, which is probably one of the stand out moments for me. The tutors made learning engaging, fun and interactive, in an inclusive and empowering way.

What was the support like?

I found the university a very supportive environment, from the lecturers, fellow students and wellbeing teams. The library team were especially helpful with researching specific areas of study.

How do you think you have benefited from studying at Wrexham University?

I feel I have benefited both professionally and personally. I am proud to now be recognised as a professional youth worker with JNC status and feel my practice has improved as a result of the learning I was fortunate to have been part of. Personally, I feel I have benefited from studying at Wrexham and cherish the learning experience as one I can continue to learn from.

Would you recommend undertaking a course with Wrexham University, and why?

I would definitely recommend undertaking a course with Wrexham University for the learning opportunities, professional development and sense of belonging.

A time to learn in a safe, supportive environment, being encouraged to reach my potential.”
