A Forensic Science student’s take on our interprofessional ‘Major Incident Day’

Major Incident Day is an annual event whereby students from a range of disciplines work interprofessionally to solve simulated, ‘real-life’ case studies. In this blog, Jenny, one of our Forensic Science students, shares her experience of the day.

1. What was your role during the Major Incident Day, and what did it involve?

As Forensic Science students, we were tasked with conducting CSI on the incident scene.

2. How did it feel to take part in a real-life scenario?

I was a bit nervous at first, but once you knew what was expected of you and how things were to be conducted, it was really quite exciting!

3. What skills did you use and/or develop during the day?

Definitely how to work effectively as a team and relinquish the need to question everything. It is so important to trust your team and just let everything else go on around you and just focus on what you are doing.

4. How did you collaborate with students from other courses during the event?

We worked with the Policing and Paramedic Science students, all of which we had never worked with, or even met before. It was really good to see how they do things and what they would do in a situation like this. It’s like seeing the last pieces of the puzzle really!

5. How do you think this experience will help you in your future career?

I honestly still don’t know what I want to do when I ‘grow up’, but the experience has really opened my eyes to different working environments, predicting the unpredictable and how to deal with things thrown at you on the spot!

6. What was your biggest takeaway or lesson learned from the day?

That communication is key! It is so vital to know and understand what everyone is doing at all times!

7. Would you recommend this experience to future students, and if so, why?

Oh 100%! Especially if you are still torn on future career paths, just to see how a real-life scenario would be run and try to imagine where and how you fit into and can help in a situation.

8. What advice would you give to students participating in future Major Incident Days?

Enjoy it, and take in as much as you possibly can, you never know when that experience or tiny bit of knowledge you unknowingly absorb will be helpful!
