From India to the UK: my personal and professional journey

My name is Ashish, and I am from Haryana, India. I am currently pursuing my studies in MSc International Business Management at Wrexham University and have also secured a part-time marketing role working within the international office. Business Management has always intrigued me, particularly entrepreneurship, with my goal of building sustainable and profitable businesses.
Why Wrexham University?
I chose to study at Wrexham University because it excels in student support and satisfaction. The University offers a range of support services, from academic tutoring to career advice, ensuring that every student receives the guidance they need to succeed.
The city is very affordable, and the University is conveniently located, with easy access to public transport links such as the bus stand and railway station, both just a short distance from the Plas Coch campus. Wrexham University’s commitment to student support, academic success, and inclusivity makes it the ideal place to grow and succeed.
Moving from India to the UK
Moving from India to the UK was both exciting and challenging. I initially faced a culture shock. I had to adjust to new social norms, a different food culture, financial challenges, and a more independent way of life. The UK’s education system, with its emphasis on independent learning and critical thinking, was a big shift from what I was used to in India. Additionally, language barriers and the local accent posed some initial difficulties in communication, but it's all part of the growth process. I’ve made some friends and embraced cultures to better understand different languages and traditions. This has helped me expand my perspective and feel more connected to the diverse community around me.
Additionally, ASK (the University’s first stop shop for any student support related needs) has been a lifesaver, offering guidance for everything from dissertation advice to mental health support.
Adjusting to cultural differences
To navigate the challenges of studying abroad, I focused on being proactive and adaptable. The support and mentorship I received from my tutors played a pivotal role in helping me overcome challenges and excel in my studies. I have been actively exploring and analysing various aspects of the business marketing field to identify my specific area of interest and develop a deeper understanding of where my strengths and passions lie. I immersed myself in local customs, attended seminars, and engaged with both local and international students. This not only helped me feel more at home but also allowed me to adjust to the cultural differences.
University highlight – Diwali event
One of my highlights was meeting the first Member of Parliament at a Diwali event in Swansea - an experience I found truly phenomenal. During this event, I also had the opportunity to meet influential figures in business and government. These interactions were invaluable, as they boosted my confidence and helped me realise the importance of building a strong network. By making new friends and connecting with professionals, I gained deeper insights into their systems and perspectives, which further enhanced my personal and professional growth.
Securing part-time employment
One of the most rewarding moments in my journey so far is securing a part-time job as a Social Media Marketing Assistant at the University. This opportunity came as a direct result of my consistent hard work and active involvement in university activities. I focused on learning as much as I could, actively engaging with professors, and through a process of self-reflection and exploration, I’ve identified my true passion and the path I am truly meant to pursue. This clarity has ignited a renewed sense of purpose and determination in shaping my future.
This role allows me to apply what I have learned in a real-world setting. It has not only strengthened my skills, but also helped me build connections within the academic and professional communities.
Pro tip: For students reading this, I want to emphasise the power of staying engaged and proactive. Whether it’s in class, extracurriculars, or placements, your hard work and enthusiasm will always open doors for you!
