How studying a postgraduate business degree transformed my career path

Background

I am originally from Nigeria, where I earned my undergraduate degree in Applied Chemistry at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (Lautech). My background in analytical chemistry, technology, and data-driven fields sparked my interest in expanding my knowledge and career beyond my home country. 

While studying at Lautech, I discovered my passion for business strategy and growth. I often found myself helping friends scale their businesses by improving visibility and implementing strategies for growth. Their recurring requests for more guidance made me realise I had a natural inclination for business consulting. This curiosity, coupled with my desire to gain deeper expertise, led me to pursue a Master’s in International Business and Data Analytics at Wrexham University. 

Why I Chose Wrexham

When exploring options for my master’s degree, Wrexham stood out for several reasons. The University’s practical, career-focused approach to education perfectly aligned with my learning style. Additionally, its reputation for strong student support, industry collaborations, and emphasis on real-world applications made it an ideal choice. 

Beyond academics, I was drawn to Wrexham’s welcoming and inclusive environment. Moving to a new country is never easy, but the University’s close-knit community made my transition smooth. With small class sizes and accessible lecturers, I had the opportunity to engage more deeply, ask questions, and build meaningful connections—all of which enhanced my learning experience. 

My Experience at Wrexham University 

Studying at Wrexham has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. The lecturers were not just educators, but mentors who provided continuous support, feedback, and career advice. Their hands-on teaching style helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling me to develop both technical expertise and problem-solving abilities. 

A defining moment in my academic journey was my ADP 701 (Advanced Practice) module, which provided me with work-based learning at Codex Integrity. This experience was invaluable—I was able to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business challenges. 

At Codex Integrity, I had the rare opportunity to work across multiple departments, including Business Administration, Operations, Finance, and Admin. This exposure gave me a holistic understanding of business processes, enhanced my analytical skills, and deepened my ability to connect data insights with strategic decision-making. 

This hands-on experience significantly boosted my confidence and prepared me for the competitive job market. I learned how data is managed, analysed, and leveraged in professional settings, which gave me an edge when applying for roles after my studies. 

Securing a Role as a Business Data Analyst 

Thanks to the knowledge, skills, and experience I gained at Wrexham University, I have secured a role as a Business Data Analyst at Gatewen Training Service. 

In this role, I will be responsible for centralising data across the company and making it easily accessible to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency. I will also create a visualised platform to simplify complex data and ensure that insights are easily understood across all departments. 

This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the solid foundation I built at Wrexham University. The combination of classroom learning, real-world application, and mentorship from my lecturers played a crucial role in shaping my journey. The experience not only developed my technical skills but also gave me the confidence to embrace new challenges in the business and data analytics field. 

Final Thoughts 

Reflecting on my time at Wrexham University, I am incredibly grateful for the support I received—from my lecturers, peers, and the University community. The journey has been life-changing, equipping me with the skills, mindset, and confidence to succeed in my career.
