My experience studying Social Work at Wrexham University

I always knew that I wanted to pursue a profession that aligned with my values and my passion for equity and social justice. It was this aim that led me to discover the Social Work course at Wrexham University. From my initial reading of the course modules to my experience of their face-to-face interview, I was overwhelmed with a sense of welcome and a dedication to providing a comprehensive and enriching experience for each and every student.

Learning Environment

I am thrilled to be surrounded by like-minded, passionate individuals who share in the very values that brought me here to begin with and teaching staff that deeply values the interests, needs and experiences of each individual student to best support them through their university journey.

Our classes encourage self-growth, with interactive, accessible lectures that allow space for us to reflect on our own viewpoints and express our individual thoughts and experiences. We are also given the incredible opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of individuals called Outside In. Each group member is an expert by experience and chooses to dedicate their time to work alongside us as students, creating a space of openness where we can grow in our understanding and gain insight into the real-life impact that social work has.

From guest lectures and day trips to debates and collaborative work, the teaching style throughout the Social Work course is incredibly varied. We even have our very own on-campus simulation house, Ty Dysgu, set up to enable us to experience real life scenarios that we may face within our practice.

Practice Learning Opportunities

One major aspect of this degree course is our Practice Learning Opportunity (PLO) / placement opportunity, which we undertake each year with a different organisation. Having just completed my first PLO, I can confidently say that it has been an invaluable experience like no other. Gaining first-hand experience within a professional environment, directly interacting with individuals within the social care setting and applying our taught theory to practice has been vital in building my own toolkit of skills. My PLO has affirmed the confidence I have in my own professional capability, broadened my perspective of the role of social workers and demonstrated the immensely positive impact that this profession has within our communities.

Reflection

Having reached the end of my first year studying Social Work at Wrexham University, I am able to reflect on the ways in which my own identity - both professionally and personally - has grown and developed over this past year. I have gained experiences that have encouraged me to question some of my previous mindsets and have learned a great deal about myself and the values that I hold. The class I am in has transformed into a community of support and friendship and we have all learned a great deal about the diverse roles that social workers can hold within our society.

To anyone who shares in these values and wants to pursue their passion for advocacy, empowerment and equality in their future profession, I would highly recommend the Wrexham University Social Work course. It is an experience filled with opportunities, support and self-growth and I cannot wait for what my second year will offer!
