What you will study

Year 1 (Level 7)

  • Investment and Valuation: In this module, you will develop a sophisticated understanding of investment theory, asset pricing models and valuation methodologies. You will examine equity valuation, fixed income analysis and portfolio construction through both quantitative and qualitative lenses, applying industry-standard approaches to real and simulated investment scenarios. The module equips you to critically evaluate financial markets and assess investment opportunities, preparing you for careers in investment banking, asset management, financial advisory services and corporate finance. Pathways to CFA and CIMA qualifications are supported throughout.
  • Data Analytics: This forward-looking module equips you with the data literacy and analytical skills that define the modern finance professional. You will learn to work with large financial datasets, apply statistical modelling and use industry-relevant software tools to extract meaningful insights from complex information. Topics include data visualisation, predictive analytics, financial forecasting and an introduction to machine learning applications in finance. Case studies draw on international financial datasets, and Welsh business contexts are embedded throughout, ensuring your learning bridges the global and the local.
  • Financial Reporting and Regulation: This module provides an advanced exploration of financial reporting frameworks, international accounting standards and regulatory environments. You will critically evaluate the preparation and interpretation of financial statements under IFRS and UK GAAP, examine the governance structures that underpin corporate reporting, and assess the impact of evolving regulation on business decision-making. Drawing on real-world cases from a range of international and Welsh contexts, you will develop the technical reporting skills and analytical judgement demanded by professional accounting bodies including ACCA and ICAEW.
  • Strategic Management Accounting: This module examines the strategic dimension of management accounting, exploring how financial information is used to shape organisational strategy, drive performance and support long-term decision-making. You will analyse a range of management accounting tools and frameworks - including balanced scorecards, activity-based costing and strategic cost management - and apply them within complex, dynamic organisational scenarios. The module integrates sustainability reporting and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks, reflecting the growing importance of responsible business practice in contemporary financial management.
  • Capstone Project: The Capstone Project is the intellectual centrepiece of your MSc journey. You will undertake an independently designed and executed research project on a topic of your choosing within accounting, finance or a related discipline. Supported throughout by expert supervisors, you will conduct an original investigation that draws together the knowledge and skills you have developed across the programme, producing a substantial piece of work that demonstrates your readiness for doctoral study or senior professional practice. The project is also an opportunity to investigate an issue of personal relevance, including those connected to your home country’s financial landscape.
