Police Registration

If you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months, and your nationality is listed below, then it is likely that you will need to register with the police on arrival to the UK.  

If you need to register, this requirement will be shown on your visa in your passport, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or the Home Office decision letter. If the requirement is not written on any of these but you think you may need to register with the police, please contact the University’s Immigration Compliance Team at  immigration@glyndwr.ac.uk.

If you do need to register with the police, you must do so within seven days of your arrival to the UK or receiving a new visa in the UK.

Who must register with the police?

Nationalities of any of the countries or territories listed in the Immigration Rules Appendix 2 are required to register with the police if the requirement is written on your visa ‘vignette’ (sticker in your passport) or on the letter or you get from the Home Office when your visa application is decided.

You can also check if you need to register with the police on the North Wales Police webpage: who needs to register.  If Police Registration is a condition of your visa, you must do so as it is a legal requirement.  You are not required to make an appointment in advance before attending at Wrexham Police Station to register your information.

Please note that students who hold a passport issued by the Special Administrative Region of either Hong Kong or Macao is classed as a Chinese national and will need to register.

You may also have to register with the police if you’re stateless or if you hold a non-national travel document.

If you hold dual nationality with one of the countries listed in Immigration Rules Appendix 2 and another country that’s not listed then you do not have to register with the police.

How do I register with the police?

You must attend at Wrexham Police Station in person within seven days of arrival in the UK. North Wales Police have indicated that you do not need to make an appointment in advance to do this.

In order to register with the Police you will need to bring the following with you:

• Passport
• Two passport-sized photographs
• Biometric Register Permit (BRP)
• Letter from the Home Office (if you have applied for your BRP in the UK)
• Proof of study (you can provide your confirmation letter from the University or CAS)
• Proof of address (e.g. a tenancy agreement or letter of confirmation from the University)
• Registration fee of £34.

Updating an existing police registration

If you already have a police registration certificate, you must update your registration within 7 days of when your personal details change. Check the list below to see what changes you must report.

You must attend at Wrexham Police Station in person to update your details.

Changes of personal details which you are required to update with the police include:

• Change of address
• Change of marital status
• Change of university/course
• New landing conditions (re-entry visa)
• New BRP card or passport
• You have become exempt from Police Registration
