BAFTA member honour for Wrexham Lecturer

A multi-award winning Computing and Gaming Lecturer has been recognised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for his contribution to the Gaming industry. 

Richard Hebblewhite, Programme Leader for Game Development, Game Design & Enterprise and Game Art at Prifysgol Wrecsam/Wrexham University, has been accepted for a full BAFTA membership. It comes as recognition of his efforts in providing opportunities and vital support for small independent game studios through initiatives such as Games Talent Wales, as well as his drive in encouraging participation in Gaming from a broad range of ages and abilities, through his work as Global Game Jam Global Regional Organiser.

The main objective of the annual Global Game Jam event is to encourage innovation and collaboration, and to connect people from across the world as they aim to develop video games from start to finish within 48 hours. All of this on top of his day-job as a Senior Lecturer at the University.

Speaking about becoming a BAFTA member, Richard said it is an “enormous honour”.

“It feels fantastic to have been accepted as a full BAFTA member. For me, it’s a huge opportunity to continue to drive forward my ambition of putting the Welsh Gaming industry even further on the map and shining a light on some of the phenomenal people working in the field in Wales,” he said.

“As part of the process to become a member, I had to provide an overview of what I do, my track record but also what I will bring to the BAFTA community – so I’m delighted that the panel liked what they saw from me. It’s definitely gratifying to have that appreciation from such a prestigious body.”

Full BAFTA members are able to take part in awards voting relevant to their experience, including access to entered films and games, as well as a year round programme of screenings, events and networking opportunities from BAFTA partners.
