University alumni honoured for her inspiring others to embark on further study

A Wrexham Glyndwr University alumni has been recognised for inspiring others through her passion of learning and education by being named the winner of a prestigious award.

Simona Petrova, who graduated with a degree in Financial Technology Management and went onto study for her Masters at the university, has been honoured with the Owain Glyndwr Society Award – a prize awarded to alumnus who have made an outstanding contribution to a particular area.

Simona’s nomination details her commitment, passion and how she used her own learning experiences to inspire others – including her two sons, nine-year-old David and six-year-old Kevin and their classmates after speaking at their school, in a bid to encourage and motivate the next generation of learners.

The nomination states: “Simona’s motivation for studying at the university was to show her children that study was important to succeed in life.

“During her second year of study, she joined the team of Student Ambassadors – her most enjoyable job ever! Through this love of her job and study, Simona used it as a way of promoting the university.

“She went on to speak at her children’s schools after being invited to share her experiences of learning and education, and motivating the next generation to finish school and undertake further study.”

Since completing her studies, Simona has continued to support students and promote learning and education, particularly at the university, through her new role as part of the Careers team and working on the ASK student information desk.

Rounding off the nomination, it states: “Simona’s roles have allowed her to support at university open days where she has actively continued to advocate for learning and education to future students using her own experiences and passion for study to help show others how they can benefit from it.”

Upon being presented with the award, Simona, who lives in Wrexham, said: “I am extremely surprised and very proud of myself and my achievements. I’m so happy the university recognised and appreciated my hard work.

“Speaking at my children’s schools has heightened their interest in pursuing higher education and exploring what subject they want to study. They have said they would like to go to Wrexham Glyndwr University to study locally and as they know that we can provide amazing opportunities for students.”

Maria Hinfelaar, Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham Glyndwr University, added: “I am proud to present the Owain Glyndwr Society Award to Simona this year. This unique award marks her academic performance and makes her stand out from her fellow graduates.

“She now joins the ranks of previous Wrexham Glyndwr University alumni who were similarly recognised by the Owain Glyndwr Society. We are grateful for their continued support.”
