University announces programme of research lectures for new academic year

Wrexham University’s Research team has announced its programme of public lectures for this academic year – with the first centred around healthcare education and the cutting-edge research that academics are leading on to transform healthcare.
Now in its fourth year, the Wrexham Talks Research Public Lecture series continues to grow and evolve, with a host of topics being covered during the lectures this academic year.
The first of which, entitled ‘Tomorrow’s World: Healthcare Heroes’ is taking place on Wednesday, October 16, from 4.30pm at Wrexham University – and is free to attend.
The event will provide an opportunity to find out about the University’s ongoing projects in collaboration with local health boards, as well as how its research and investments in transformative technology equips graduates to work in a wide range of healthcare careers serving the local community.
Dr Caroline Hughes, Associate Dean for Student Engagement at Wrexham University, said: “We are delighted to be kick-starting this year’s Wrexham Talks Research series with lectures focussing on healthcare education and the pioneering research that our academics are leading on, in a bid to transform healthcare, including innovations relating to technology and the methods being applied to improve patient experience
“I would strongly encourage those looking to go into Nursing and Health related professions to come along to this lecture to find out about the research we’re leading on in relation to healthcare education, as well as how we prepare our graduates for their chosen careers.”
Other talks taking place throughout the academic year, as part of the public lecture series, include:
- Foxholes: Understanding Grit and Resilience – delivered by Julian Ayres, Senior Lecturer in Education, on December 5.
- Pawsome Support for Confident Reading in Children and Easing Stress for University Students – delivered by Dr Shubha Sreenivas, Senior Lecturer in Biological Psychology, on January 29, 2025.
- The Wrexham Art Treasures Exhibition of 1876 – delivered by Peter Bolton, Senior Lecturer in History, on March 12, 2025.
- The Impact of AI on Business and Government Sectors – delivered by Dr Phoey Teh, Senior Lecturer in Computing, on April 29, 2025.
- Climate Change Exposed: Separating Fact from Fiction for Deniers and Sceptics – delivered by Dr David Sprake, Senior Lecturer in Engineering, on May 28, 2025.
Frances Thomason, Head of Research Services at Wrexham University, added: “The purpose of our public lecture series is to invite discussion and debate in a variety of thought-provoking subject areas.
“We pride ourselves on our applied research – research that transforms, research that impacts the local community and the wider world, and we want to share this with you in an accessible and engaging way.
“All of these lectures take place at our Wrexham campus during evenings and are free and open to all. Those who come along will be able to enjoy some complimentary food and refreshments, whilst networking with attendees and speakers beforehand, before listening to the talks delivered by our researchers, and then followed by audience questions.”
