Your Clearing Questions Answered

Applying through clearing can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to have more questions along the way. These FAQs can help you understand the process, explore your options and feel more confident about applying.

  • What is Clearing, and is it something to worry about?

Clearing is the UCAS process that helps you find university courses that still have places available. it can be useful if you have not received an offer, have changed your mind since receiving an offer, or are applying for the first time. It needn’t feel daunting; it is your opportunity to find a course that is right for you and still start your university experience this September.

  • What should I do if I don't get the grades for my firm choice?

If your grades are different from what you expected, it can be unsettling – but the clearing process ensures that your options are still open. Check your UCAS Hub first, as your firm choice may still have confirmed your place. If your place has not been confirmed, your insurance choice may yet confirm your place, and we can also help you discover what you may wish to do next.

  • What happens if my firm and insurance choices are unable to confirm my place?

You can use clearing to explore courses with places available at Wrexham University. Our admissions team can talk you through your options and help you understand whether we may be able to consider you.

  • Will universities contact me if they have spaces available?

Wrexham University uses Clearing Plus, meaning that if you also use Clearing Plus UCAS will match you with our courses based on your interests and qualifications. We will then contact you about places available.

  • I didn't sign up for Clearing Plus. Can I still apply?

Yes, you can still apply through clearing by finding courses with places available on our website and contacting us directly.

  • Do I need to call the university to get a place in clearing?

Not always. You can apply for clearing courses directly online through our website. If you do wish to speak to someone first, you can get in touch with us by phone, email or webchat. A parent, guardian or supporter can help, but you need to be present and give permission to us to speak with them.

  • I have changed my mind about the place I already have. Can I use Clearing?

Yes, you can still apply to us for any course available through clearing, but you should speak to us first about the course that you interested in before making any changes in the UCAS Hub. Declining the current offer that you have is a big decision, so you must make sure you understand your options first.

  • How can I prepare for Clearing?

If Wrexham is somewhere that you’re considering, make a shortlist of courses that you are interested in. Check entry requirements and keep your UCAS ID, results and any questions close to hand so you are ready to act quickly.

“I was still figuring out what I wanted to study when I started looking at universities accepting applications through Clearing. It was late summer and time was ticking, but Wrexham University's Professional Policing degree stood out straight away because it was practical, career-focused and grounded in real-world experience. I expected the Clearing process to feel stressful, but the Admissions team explained every step clearly and helped me to complete my application over the phone. Even though I applied late, I never felt rushed or lost - Clearing became a brand-new beginning for me.”

“When I finished my A-levels, I had planned to take a gap year, but by the end of that summer, I knew I wanted to start university that September. Because it was so late in the year, Clearing was the route that made it possible. I applied to Wrexham University in the final week of August and chose Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Conservation Science because the course offered the variety I wanted for a future career working with animals. Looking back, I'm so thankful I was able to apply through Clearing at short notice - my degree was everything I wanted it to be and more.”
