Angela Winstanley

Angela Winstanley is Principal Lecturer for Wrexham University’s Northop Campus, where she oversees the Animal Science portfolio across Veterinary Nursing, Canine Behaviour, Training and Performance, and Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Conservation.

Angela holds a first-class BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology from the University of Liverpool and an MSc in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling from the University of Southampton. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has completed Advance HE’s Aurora leadership development programme.

One Welfare is central to Angela’s teaching, research and academic leadership. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary and cross-sector approaches that recognise the connections between animal welfare, human wellbeing, environmental sustainability and community health, bringing together academic and professional expertise to address real-world welfare challenges.

Her research interests include the links between animal and human abuse, particularly in relation to safeguarding, professional education and collaborative practice. Her wider interests encompass human–animal interactions, animal learning and behaviour, wellbeing within the animal-care sector, and the contribution of animal- and nature-based learning to children’s wellbeing and engagement in education.

Angela also advises on the use of detection dogs in conservation and works with industry specialists to support high standards of training, assessment and animal welfare. She is committed to translating research and professional expertise into humane, evidence-informed practice that benefits people, animals and the wider environment.
