Stephen is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences with a particular interest in palliative care.

An interest in medicine developed whilst researching the spatial distribution of mental illness as part of a geography degree. Stephen went on to study medicine at Southampton with postgraduate studies in Oxford. Stephen’s interest in the overlap between medicine and geography culminated in an attachment to the Medical Research Council’s Environmental Epidemiology Unit, researching the environmental triggers of thyroid disease.

During postgraduate training, he worked at Sobell House Hospice in Oxford at a time when palliative medicine was emerging as a distinct speciality.

After a 20-year career in primary care and as team Doctor to a professional club, he returned to hospice medicine at Pilgrim’s Hospice in East Kent. In addition to clinical work, he was the Principal Investigator for national studies in hydration at end of life and research into prognostication.

Stephen also has a degree in law and has a particular interest in medical law and the application of virtue ethics to clinical practice.

He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate nurses and paramedics. He is also a contributor to a textbook on palliative care for paramedics.
