Before starting at Wrexham University, I had already been working in the construction and civil engineering industry for over 10 years, gaining practical experience across a range of projects.

The Degree Apprenticeship route really appealed to me as it allowed me to continue progressing in my career while gaining an academic qualification alongside my practical experience.

I am studying Civil Engineering through the Degree Apprenticeship programme. The course covers areas including structural engineering, surveying, mathematics, construction management, sustainability and engineering design.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Being part of a relatively close-knit course also makes it easy to get to know other students and lecturers.

I enjoy being able to relate what I learn at university directly to the projects and challenges I encounter at work. It makes the academic side much more relevant.

The support has been very good. Lecturers are approachable and willing to help, particularly when adjusting to university study alongside a full-time career.

It has strengthened my technical knowledge and given me a better understanding of the engineering principles behind the work I was already carrying out practically.

Yes. I would recommend it to anyone considering a Degree Apprenticeship, it provides a great opportunity to combine academic learning with real industry experience.

As I was already working in the industry, university has helped me develop the technical, analytical and problem-solving skills needed to take on greater responsibility and progress into more senior roles.

I am still completing my degree and currently work as a Contracts Manager within civil engineering. My role involves managing projects, coordinating site teams and designers, dealing with clients and stakeholders, and overseeing safety, programme, quality and commercial performance.

Some of my biggest highlights have been progressing into a Contracts Manager role, working on major and emergency civil engineering projects across North Wales, winning the ICE Undergraduate Award for Wrexham University in 2025, and being named ICE Wales Apprentice of the Year 2026.

Wrexham has helped bridge the gap between my practical experience and engineering theory. It has increased my confidence technically and professionally and has supported my progression into more senior roles within the industry.
