Care Experienced Students
Choosing to study at university is a significant milestone and can feel overwhelming. Wrexham University is committed to easing this transition and acknowledges that care experienced students may need extra support to make the most of their university experience. A tailored support package is available for care experienced students., which includes:
- A link member of staff who can act as a link between the University, you, and your Local Authority.
- A named contact who will support you throughout your studies, provide guidance and information on accessing support services, organize regular one-to-one support meetings, and keep you updated with relevant news and opportunities.
- Students can apply for an accommodation bursary, which includes prioritized accommodation and a 25% discount on accommodation costs.
- Up to a £1000 bursary, paid in two instalments in each academic year.
- Bespoke advice and guidance regarding funding options, budget management, and advice on what bursaries or grants you may be eligible for.
- Careers & Employability support, with lifelong support for current students and graduates of Wrexham University.
The University defines the following as eligibility criteria for this support package:
“A student, aged 25 and under when they begin their course, who has had experience of care. This means they will have spent time living with foster carers under local authority care, in residential care (e.g. a children’s home), looked after at home under a supervision order, or in kinship care with relatives or friends, either officially (e.g. a special guardianship order) or informally without local authority support”.

If you have experience of care and you are applying for university, we strongly encourage you to tick the box in the care questions on your UCAS application. This will allow the University to get in touch with you to discuss the support we can offer.
