Estranged Students
Choosing to study at university is a big step, and it can feel especially daunting if you’ve been estranged from your family. Wrexham University understands this and is committed to making the transition easier. We recognise that estranged students may need additional support to feel secure, settled, and able to thrive during their time here. A dedicated support package is available for estranged students, which includes:
- A named contact who will support you throughout your studies, provide guidance and information on accessing support services, organize regular one-to-one support meetings and keep you updated with relevant news and opportunities.
- Once an application has been approved by Student Finance and a student has been assessed as independent due to estrangement, they will be eligible for the Estranged Bursary of up to £1000, paid in instalments in each academic year. Evidence of the Student Finance assessment will be required.
- Students can apply for an accommodation bursary, which includes prioritized accommodation and a 25% discount on accommodation costs.
- Bespoke advice and guidance regarding funding options, budget management and advice on what bursaries or grants you may be eligible for.
- Careers & Employability support, with lifelong support for current students and graduates of Wrexham University
The University defines the following as eligibility criteria for this support package:
“Young people aged 25 or below, studying without the support and approval of either parent due to a breakdown in their relationship. This might be biological, step or adoptive parents, or possibly wider family members who have been involved in your care”.
You can read the full terms and conditions for the targeted support bursaries here - Terms and Conditions
