An Engineering Student’s Experience at the Dutch Grand Prix

Hello, my name is April and I’m a first year BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering student at Wrexham University. Before starting my degree, I had an amazing opportunity to attend the Dutch Grand Prix as a VIP guest of the F1 Academy and Mercedes sponsor TeamViewer. I was invited because of my own business and experience in the STEM field, and it was an inspiring way to begin my journey into university life and the world of engineering.
How The Opportunity to Attend the Dutch Grand Prix Came About
This opportunity came about through my personal involvement in STEM and the work I’ve done to inspire others, especially young women, to get involved in science and engineering. TeamViewer and the F1 Academy recognised my passion and invited me to the Dutch Grand Prix as a guest to celebrate women in motorsport and technology.

Although this happened just before I started university, my lecturers and classmates at Wrexham have been so supportive and interested in hearing about my experience. It’s great to be in an environment where achievements like this are valued and celebrated.
My Experience at the Dutch Grand Prix
Day One:
On the first day, I spent my time in the F1 Academy hospitality area in the Paddock Club. It was an amazing experience from start to finish. I got to spend time with the TeamViewer team, explore the hospitality space, and even meet Susie Wolff who was really inspiring to talk to. From there, I had an incredible view of the pits and main straight, which made the whole experience even more exciting.

Later I had the chance to get close up to the F1 pits and paddock, which was absolutely brilliant. I also visited the F1 Academy paddock, where I saw my face featured on the TeamViewer Academy car - something I’ll never forget! I had a lovely chat with the driver Esmee Kosterman and the Hitech engineering team about the car and their work.

To finish the day, I was able to stand near Turn 3 and capture some amazing footage of the F1 Academy cars racing around the circuit, being that close to the action was unforgettable.
Day Two:
On the second day, I watched the cars from the grandstand, with a brilliant view of the main straight and the rest of the track. The atmosphere was incredible, hearing and feeling the cars go past was something truly special. I also spent time exploring other parts of the circuit and even managed to see a few of the drivers up close, which was the perfect way to end the weekend.

What I Learned From This Experience
This experience taught me so much about the real-world application of engineering and teamwork. Seeing how everything works behind the scenes gave me a new appreciation for how theory and practice come together in motorsport.
I learned how important attention to detail and innovation are in engineering, and I left feeling inspired to keep developing my skills. It also reinforced my decision to study Automotive Engineering, as I want to build a career in a field where technology and creativity meet to push boundaries.
Why Study at Wrexham University?
