My Journey from Criminology Student to Trainee Teacher

University is often described as a transformative experience - a place where knowledge is gained, passions are discovered, and futures are shaped. For me, studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at Wrexham University was all of that and more. It was also a time marked by significant personal challenges, including multiple rounds of cancer treatment. Yet, throughout it all, one thing remained constant: the support, kindness, and encouragement I received from the Criminology team at Wrexham University.

My Path into Criminology

When I first joined the Criminology course, I was drawn in by the subject’s depth and relevance. I was eager to understand the roots of criminal behaviour, the workings of the justice system, and how society responds to harm and inequality. The teaching staff were passionate and engaging, creating a learning environment where critical thinking was encouraged and real-world issues were explored with care and integrity.

It didn’t take long for me to feel at home academically - but personally, I was about to face some of the most difficult moments of my life.

Navigating Health Challenges During University

During my time at Wrexham, I underwent several cancer treatments. These experiences were exhausting, painful, and emotionally overwhelming. Balancing my studies with the realities of serious illness was never easy, and there were times when continuing my degree felt like an impossible task. But, at Wrexham University, I was never made to feel like I was going through it alone.

Support Available at Wrexham University

The support I received from the Criminology department was nothing short of life-changing. The staff consistently demonstrated understanding, patience, and genuine care. Whether it was through checking in, providing flexibility with deadlines, or simply listening when I needed to talk - they went above and beyond to make sure I could continue my studies in a way that worked for me. Their belief in my ability to succeed, even when I doubted myself, gave me the strength to keep going.

The University also has a wider student support network, including Counselling and Mental Health, Student Wellbeing, and much more, ensuring that students always have someone to talk to, no matter what they’re going through.

The Move into Teaching

Through this journey, I began to see the power of education - not just as a tool for knowledge, but as a force for support and personal growth. The compassion and guidance I experienced from my lecturers inspired me to consider how I could give back - how I could be that same source of support for others.

This led me to pursue teacher training, where I hope to carry forward everything I’ve learned - not only from my academic studies, but from my personal experiences and the incredible people who helped me along the way.

Reflecting On My Experience at Wrexham University

Now, as a trainee teacher, I look back at my time at Wrexham University with immense gratitude. The Criminology team didn’t just help me earn a degree - they helped me rebuild my confidence, discover a new passion, and realise that with the right support, anything is possible.

To the staff who stood by me, thank you for everything! Your compassion has left a lasting impact, and I’ll carry those lessons with me into every classroom I enter.

To anyone facing their own challenges: know that support is out there. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. At Wrexham, you’re never just a number - you’re part of a community that cares.
