It’s no secret – taking some annual leave is one way to hit the reset button, but there are many other things you can do to recharge your career over Summer!

First and foremost, taking ‘time off’ should mean taking time off. A rest and recharge will prove beneficial to your health AND your productivity, so try and ensure you take some time away from work, unplug and switch off.

Start your day earlier

Not really a morning person? Not to worry, you can take it step-by-step by waking up just 30 minutes earlier than you normally would one week at a time. Walking early eliminates the need to rush in the morning and enables you to start your day on a more optimistic note which should stay with you throughout the day. Some people find unexpected inspiration and increased levels of productivity in the early, quiet mornings, so make the most of the opportunity to explore this over Summer if you can.

Long term thinking in the short term!

Take advantage of the quieter summer months to assess your career options, realign your priorities, and set new goals for the months to follow. Write down your long term goals and then an action list of what you can do towards achieving them! Setting these out in black and white will bring these at the forefront of your mind and breaking things down into smaller actions and tasks will enable you to focus on the shorter-term wins whilst working towards your longer term goals.

Upskill and fulfil

Signed up to any classes for Summer? Be it ones aimed at filling in the gaps in your professional skillset or those focussed on your health & wellbeing, motivation, confidence or other personal growth areas? This time of year is the perfect time to pick up a new book, learn something new or book yourself onto a course or retreat – all of which in turn can set you in good stead for a motivation boost and hit the re-set button.

Keep the conversation going

Do you wish to grow in your current role? Engage your manager in your own career development by keeping communication open and flowing. Request he or she meet with you to discuss your career progress when you return from your Summer break and ask them to share what they think your greatest skills are and in what areas you could develop. Discuss their long-term goals for the company, the team, and you, and let them know where your thinking is at and what areas you feel you yourself would like to develop.
