Starting university? Here’s what you should know

Students in a lecture

Starting university is an exciting new chapter, but it can often come with a lot of questions. From what will my first day consist of?’ to what events and/or societies can I get involved with?, there’s plenty to think about in your first few weeks.

To help you feel prepared, we’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions we receive from students have before starting university.

What can I expect from my first day?

On your first day, you'll receive a warm welcome and take part in an orientation session. You'll meet the programme team, including lecturers and support staff, and learn about the course structure and expectations.

You’ll also meet fellow students and start building connections. There may be icebreakers to help you settle in.

Expect an overview of your course, including modules, assessments, and practical requirements. You'll also receive details about timetables, online platforms, and available support.

Finally, you'll complete any paperwork and receive your student ID, where your journey as a Wrexham Uni student will officially begin!

What support can I get if I struggle?

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you throughout your studies. Additionally, there are academic skills tutors available to guide you with various aspects of your academic work - from writing to time management. For more information on the support available to you, visit our Student Support page.

What sort of events do the Students’ Union offer?

What societies do you have at the University and how do I join?

To join, visit the Students’ Union website, attend the Fresher's Fair, or sign up at recruitment events. New members are welcome throughout the year, and students can also create their own society with Union support.

What opportunities are there for professional development?

University is not just about studying – it’s about building skills for your future career. As well as building skills through our hands-on courses and placement opportunities, you can gain valuable experience by becoming a student ambassador, securing part-time work with help from our Careers and Employability team, or take part in volunteering opportunities. These experiences help to boost your CV, develop key skills, and make you stand out to employers.

The first few weeks at university can feel like a whirlwind but remember that you’re not alone and there’s plenty of support available. Make the most of the opportunities around you, ask for help when you need it, and most importantly – enjoy the experience!
