  • General Questions

    How long do appointments take?

Appointment length varies depending on the service:

    • VO₂ Max appointments: 90–120 minutes.
    • Lactate Threshold 90–120 minutes.
    • Full Health MOT and Body Composition appointments: approximately 1 hour.

Time includes screening, warm-up, cool-down and discussion of results.

Which test will help determine my training zones?

If your main goal is identifying training zones, the Ventilatory Threshold (VT) test is usually the most suitable option.

This follows a similar protocol to Lactate Threshold testing but uses gas analysis equipment to identify training thresholds.

  • VO₂ Max Testing

Can I book a VO₂ Max and Lactate Threshold test together?

No. These assessments use different testing protocols and cannot be performed within the same session.

Is VO₂ Max testing carried out using a mask and gas analysis equipment?

Yes. We use the Cortex Metalyzer with Hans Rudolph masks for direct breath-by-breath gas analysis, providing detailed metabolic and cardiopulmonary measurements in real time.

Is the VO₂ Max test treadmill-based?

Testing is primarily treadmill-based and this is our recommended option. However, testing can also be completed using a Monark Ergometer Bike if appropriate.

    Will I receive my results?

    Yes. You will receive:

    • A copy of your physiological data (Excel format)
    • A verbal explanation of your results
    • Comparison against normative data

What information is included in my VO₂ Max results?

    Results can include:

    • VO₂ Max value
    • Ventilatory Threshold 1 (VT1)
    • Ventilatory Threshold 2 (VT2)
    • Peak values
    • Heart rate data
    • Respiratory measurements
    • Exercise stage information

Data can also be smoothed to your preferred reporting interval (for example, every 30 seconds).

Does VO₂ Max testing provide heart rate training zones?

VO₂ Max testing does not directly calculate training zones, but these can be estimated using your VO₂ Max data.

  • Lactate Threshold Testing

Is lactate measured using blood samples?

Yes. We use the Lactate Pro 2 meter, with blood lactate collected using a finger-prick sample during each stage of testing.

Heart rate and lactate threshold values are recorded throughout the assessment.

  • Body Composition

    How is body composition measured?

We use the SECA mBCA 515 Body Composition Analyser, which uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology.

What information does body composition analysis provide?

    Measurements can include:

    • Body fat percentage
    • Fat-free mass
    • Muscle mass (whole and segmental)
    • Total body water
    • Body cell mass
    • Intracellular and extracellular water

Does body composition analysis measure bone density?

No. The system does not measure bone density.

  • Health Assessments

What does the Full Health MOT include?

    The Full Health MOT includes:

    • Weight and height measurements
    • BMI calculation
    • Waist circumference
    • Medical questionnaire
    • Blood pressure assessment
    • Blood cholesterol testing
    • Blood sugar testing
