Construction firm boost for Wrexham Glyndwr University student

Date: Tuesday 28th February 2023

A Wrexham Glyndwr University student has joined forces with a North Wales construction firm for work on a school in the county.

Marcio Lanita, a second year Architectural Design Technology student at Wrexham Glyndwr University, has been undertaking a placement experience at Wynne Construction, with public-funded scheme of work at Ysgol yr Hafod, in Johnstown.

Keen to expand on his skills following a successful week of work experience with the company in August 2022, Marcio requested to extend his placement in December to build on his practical work experience and develop his knowledge in professional and technical skills to manage construction/architectural projects.

Under the supervision of Liam Jones, site manager at Wynne Construction, Marcio has been able to assist with the management of the subcontractors, offering instructions and monitoring the availability and costs of materials and equipment as required, as well as assisting with the daily site paperwork and adding this to site-based management system.

Liam explained the importance of placement opportunities as part of the Wynne Futures Foundation programme.

He said: “Wynne Construction is committed to offering work experience as a core aspect of our recruitment process and ensuring that we are inspiring and supporting the future workforce.

"It is easy to learn the theory of construction management and the processes involved, but a hands-on approach offers so much more.”

Marcio values the practical work experience and how this opportunity enhances his studies at Wrexham Glyndwr University, adding: “Wynne Construction is a well-known company with a great track record. I am enjoying myself developing my career here at Wynne, building a relationship with the team on site.

"Getting involved in technical discussions, and being part of the progress on site is a highlight for me.”

Touching on how his experience has supported with his studies, Marcio said: “Recent modules have been relevant to the work we are currently achieving on site, and the issues we sometimes come across on site can be discussed and used as examples during studies.”

Wrexham Glyndwr University has a long history of offering degree programmes that combine Work Related Learning opportunities with academic studies.
