Engineering students meet Director General of Institution of Civil Engineers to showcase work
Date: July 3, 2026
Engineering students from Wrexham University recently met Dr Janet Young CBE, Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and Keith Jones, Regional Director of ICE Wales, to showcase projects they are completing as part of their apprenticeship degrees.
During their visit to the Plas Coch campus, Dr Young and Mr Jones heard from Engineering faculty staff and students about the research and work‑based projects currently underway at the University. Around 90 students are enrolled on apprenticeship degrees across civil engineering, construction management, building surveying and quantity surveying. They spend up to four years working with employers such as ADAS, MPH Construction, Jones Bros (Civil Engineering) Ltd, Ymgynghoriaeth Gwynedd Consultancy, and local authorities, combining on‑the‑job learning with university study on day or block release.
Louise Duff, Programme Leader in Civil Engineering at Wrexham University, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Dr Janet Young CBE, Keith Jones, and other guests to Wrexham University. Events such as this provide invaluable opportunities for our degree apprenticeship students to network with the professional body of civil engineers and showcase their work-based projects which form a key aspect of our programme which we deliver with our partners at Coleg Cambria. Our Civil Engineering programme already has a great heritage of industrial engagement and our academic partnership with ICE provides shared expertise and guidance that fundamentally supports the Welsh Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship framework.”
Professor Anne Nortcliffe, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Computing and Engineering at Wrexham University, said: “Professional body monitoring visits are so critical to enabling us to connect our students with the wider profession and showcase how we are developing the next generation of civil engineering professionals for Wales.”
Regional Director of ICE Wales, Keith Jones said: “The Civil Engineering Degree programme at Wrexham University is thriving thanks to their facilities and teaching, partnerships with industry, block release approach, and the provision of hands-on learning opportunities. It has enabled equality of opportunity for young people in North Wales from diverse backgrounds to enter the civil engineering sector and increase the skill set in the region.”
