Wrexham University recently hosted former professional footballer, manager and player agent Paul Dalglish for a guest session at Wrexham Business School, offering insight into the evolving nature of careers in the global sports industry.
Drawing on his experience across playing, coaching and athlete representation, Dalglish spoke with Dr Ruth Slater, Dean of Wrexham Business School, about the challenges of transitioning from elite sport into leadership roles and the increasing importance of business, strategy and innovation within the sector.
Speaking at the event, Dalglish said: “The biggest opportunities in sport aren’t on the pitch they’re everything around the game.”
He highlighted the rapid growth of areas such as digital engagement, global fan experiences and commercial strategy, emphasising the need for graduates who understand sport as a complex and evolving business environment.
Dalglish also reflected on leadership, noting the shift in responsibility faced by those moving beyond playing careers: “As a player, you focus on yourself. As a leader, everything stops with you.”
The session forms part of Wrexham University’s ongoing commitment to providing students with real-world insight and industry engagement, supporting career readiness across its programmes.
Dr Ruth Slater, Wrexham Business School, said: “Hearing directly from industry professionals like Paul gives our students invaluable insight into the realities of working in sport today. It reinforces the importance of developing not only subject knowledge, but also leadership, communication and strategic thinking skills.”
Wrexham University’s MSc Sports Business Management has been designed to reflect these industry demands, combining sport and business to prepare graduates for careers across a wide range of roles, including marketing, operations, athlete management and commercial strategy.
Dr Slater added: “As the sports industry continues to expand globally, the University remains focused on equipping students with the skills and experience needed to succeed in this dynamic and competitive field.”
