Bringing lived experience to learning across the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences

Outside In is a focus group formed in 2006, involving representatives who participate in many programmes within the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences. Originally part of the undergraduate Social Work degree, the group follows the principles of the Code of Professional Practice for Social Care.

Meet the reps

Members of Outside In share their real-life experiences with neurodiversity, various health conditions, sensory impairments, and caregiving to our students studying relevant degrees.

Their input enriches students’ theoretical, simulated, and practical learning by offering authentic insights into negotiating care packages, carers assessments, renal care, adoption, and fostering.

Supported courses

Outside In reps contribute to teaching through seminars and assessments on many of our Social and Life Sciences degrees. Working with a range of health professionals, they may be part of your learning experience if you choose to pursue a degree in:

“Outside In representatives have had a huge impact on the occupational therapy programme, their involvement right from applicant stage through to teaching is key to our programme quality”

Rhiannon Macpherson Programme Lead Occupational Therapy

“We have received great support from Outside In with speakers coming in to talk about their experiences with a given subject area. Students have valued hearing about the real-life experience and have gained an appreciation of the challenges that individuals face with particular situations.Having such powerful transition of information has facilitated a greater acknowledgment and understanding of the needs of individuals and in essence supports our Health Visitors and School Nurses”

Diana Hughes-Morris Senior Lecturer, Specialist Community Public Health.

“Having Outside In come in and speak to us about their experiences and concerns of using the ambulance service was extremely helpful. Being able to sit down and have a conversation with the service users about what we could do better, what they would like to see and what we do well has helped in my progression of becoming a paramedic. It has reminded me how important the welfare of the service user is”

Gemma Social Work Graduate

“Working with Outside In underlined the meaning and practical purpose of social work values. Their knowledge and sharing of their lived experience, both in the context of struggles and challenges from personal perspectives, and practice insights from professional service involvement, elevated this groups contribution to my own learning beyond an explanation, theory, assignment, or book and still resides in my heart as a reference point on why I wanted to be, and now am - a social worker in Wales”

Rob Social Work Graduate

“Working with Outside In was invaluable throughout my social work training. It provided the opportunity to hear about individuals’ lived experiences, supporting my professional and personal development. It has helped shape my practice, influenced my career path working therapeutically with individuals and embarking on counselling training”
