Your Fees and Funding Questions Answered

A student working in The Study

University is an exciting new chapter, and we want you to feel confident about every part of it - including your finances. Whether you’re wondering about tuition fees, scholarships and bursaries or how to manage your day-to-day expenses, there’s plenty of support available at Wrexham University.

To get you started, we’ve answered some of the most common questions students ask us about fees and funding below.

How do tuition fees work?

Tuition fees cover the cost of your course, access to facilities and other university services. These fees can vary depending on your course and level of study (undergraduate or postgraduate). Most UK students don’t need to pay their tuition fees upfront - you can apply for a tuition fee loan through Student Finance.

What help is there with living costs?

You may be eligible for a maintenance loan to help with living costs such as rent, food, travel, and other day-to-day expenses. The amount you can receive depends on your household income and where you live while studying. You can learn more about maintenance loans here.

Does the university offer scholarships or bursaries?

At Wrexham University, we have a range of scholarships and bursaries available depending on your chosen study type and personal scenario. These include:

  • Care Leaver Award
  • First Generation Opportunity Scholarship
  • Welsh Domiciled Part Time UG Scholarship
  • Post Graduate Scholarship for Wrexham University Graduates
  • Estrangement Award

I am studying an NHS Wales course, what financial support is available?

If you choose to study one of our many NHS Wales courses here at Wrexham University, you can choose to fund your studies through one of two ways: The NHS Wales Bursary Scheme or Student Finance. To receive funding from the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, students will need to commit to working in Wales for two years following the completion of their course. You can learn more about the scheme here.

When do I repay my student loans?

You only start repaying your student loan once you’ve finished your course and are earning above the income threshold. Repayments are taken automatically through the tax system and are based on what you earn - not how much you borrowed. You can learn more about repaying your student loan here.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, many students work part-time whilst studying to earn some extra money, but it’s important to find a balance that doesn’t affect your studies. Our Careers and Employability Service can help you find flexible, student-friendly jobs and volunteering opportunities.

As a student at Wrexham University, you’ll have:

  • 24/7 access to qualified higher education careers advisers and employability specialists
  • One to one career advice and guidance appointments with careers advisers who can provide career planning support and guidance to create CVs, cover letters, and personal statements
  • An active board to source work and volunteering opportunities, and much more!

We also occasionally have opportunities to become part of our Student Ambassadors team – learn more about becoming an ambassador here.

What discounts are available to students?

Students can benefit from a range of discounts on shopping, food, travel, and entertainment. Signing up for schemes like TOTUM, UNiDAYS, Student Beans, and TooGoodToGo can help you save money during your studies.
