Top tips for starting university

We’re delighted that you are starting university with us this September! If you are looking for some top tips on what you should and shouldn’t do at university, we’ve got you covered.

Starting university is an exciting stage of your journey - you finally get to study a course that matches your interests and career goals. We understand that starting university can also be quite daunting however, so we have put together a useful guide on university do’s and don’ts so that you can start university feeling prepared.

Do get involved

A great way to make friends at university is by putting yourself out there. Freshers’ week is the perfect opportunity to learn everything you need to know about the University’s clubs and societies and meet your fellow students. Consider signing up to a sports team or any other societies that spark your interest, even if it’s something you’ve never tried before. If you can’t find a club that takes your fancy, speak with our Student’s Union team about setting up your own!

Do ask questions

If you have any questions, ask them! You are not expected to know everything about the University in the first few weeks. By asking questions, you might also be helping out other students who may have been wondering the same thing.

Remember to keep asking questions throughout your degree if you are unsure of anything - it’s what our lecturers are there for!

Do familiarise yourself with the campus facilities

Take some time to explore the campus facilities on offer. If you are going to be situated at our Plas Coch campus, check out the:

  • Students’ Union building – This is where several fresher’s activities will occur and it’s a hotspot for hanging out with new friends if you want to grab a drink at Glyn’s bar, for example.
  • Course classroom(s) – Your timetable will highlight where your classes will take place, so take some time to check out the room(s) and building(s) before your classes start to familiarise yourself with their whereabouts.
  • Library and Student Support Centre – This is where you will gain access to learning resources, such as journals, electronics and books, as well as plenty of quiet study and group work areas. You will also be able to speak to our student support teams, whether it’s Careers and Employability or wellbeing related.
  • Study spaces – Familiarise yourself with our modern study spaces: the B Hive, the Gallery and the Study, as these are where you will spend a lot of time doing your assignments, completing group work, and catching up with friends.
  • Sports Centre – If you are interested in sports, you can play a variety of sports, use the gym or take a class at our Sports Centre.
  • William Aston Hall – If it’s music and/or theatre that you’re into, familiarise yourself with the William Aston Hall situated on campus. This hall is an entertainment venue that attracts regular acts from retro musicians to big-name comedians.
  • Cafés – There is nothing better than catching up with new friends over a cup of coffee. Whether you are into Costa or Starbucks, we’ve got you covered across our campuses.

Do get to know the student support services

Be sure to check out what student support is available to you as it’s important to know where to turn for assistance with your studies, wellbeing, career development, and other needs. Here at Wrexham University, we have a dedicated support team who can provide guidance, resources, and assistance whenever you need it, ensuring that you have the support necessary to succeed throughout your university journey.

Do not leave things until the last minute

It is important to plan and be prepared at university to ensure that things aren’t left to the last minute and to reduce stress levels. At the beginning of term, consider creating a study schedule to keep on track of your work. For more advice, check out our productivity tips blog.

Do not neglect your wellbeing

It is easy to prioritise your studies and deadlines over your physical and mental health at university, especially during exam season. However, make sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep, as it’s crucial for both your well-being and academic performance. Also, take time to do things you enjoy, such as playing sports or reading, to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Do not spend all your student loan at once

Whilst it can be tempting to have a shopping spree when your student loan drops, it’s important to not spend it all at once. By creating a monthly budget plan, you will become more in control of your finances. You should also research what supermarket and shopping discounts are available to you. As a starting point, check out our student guide for shopping discounts.

Most importantly, do enjoy yourself! University is the perfect opportunity to meet new friends, explore your interests and develop yourself, both personally and professionally. Our student support team are here whenever you need it, and we hope your first few weeks are amazing!
