Mentor information
You will have the opportunity to help your student forge a clearer career pathway and avoid the pitfalls you have faced.
You will be a part of breaking the barriers of entry for students with fewer resources by sharing the invaluable experience and knowledge you have garnered, thereby widening access to the legal industry. As a lawyer yourself, you will remember how confusing
and daunting learning law and stepping foot into the legal industry can be.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the life of another aspiring lawyer and give back.
What is a Mentor
Our role will be a focus/support point for the law student to ask any questions or queries about the law field. One to one mentoring is a great way to support the law students especially those who are first generation university students. Mentors should be patient, reliable, friendly, respectful, and understanding of their student’s needs.
The type of mentor who would be ideally suited to this role of a mentor for a law student could be generally described as having the following attributes:
- Someone who is honest committed, trustworthy and respectful
- Can commit to one monthly 30-minute meeting with a law student
- Have good communication skills and be approachable and accessible
- Is good at setting goals and has the ability to coach the law student to reach them (even in a purely supporting capacity)
- Be a role model
- Someone who wishes to give back
