CYFLE: Our Welsh Language Strategy

The Welsh language is at the heart of who we are at Wrexham University. Rooted in our community and place, we are committed to supporting, promoting and celebrating Welsh as a living language that belongs to everyone.

Our commitment is guided by CYFLE – our Welsh language strategy. Meaning ‘opportunity’, CYFLE reflects our belief that the Welsh language creates opportunities for learning, work, community and culture, and that everyone, whatever their linguistic background, has a role to play.

From learning and teaching to research, student life and public engagement, CYFLE shapes the way we use and develop Welsh across the University. Through the strategy, we are expanding Welsh‑medium study, building staff confidence and capacity, strengthening partnerships, and responding to the needs of Wales through areas such as health, education and the public sector.

This section highlights how CYFLE supports our work in Welsh, the services and study opportunities available through the language, and how Wrexham University is contributing to the future of Welsh locally, nationally and beyond.

Our core values

Belonging

Welsh at Wrexham University is for everyone. CYFLE is rooted in creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where staff and students can engage with the language at any level, without barriers or stigma.

Opportunity

Meaning “opportunity”, CYFLE reflects our belief that Welsh creates academic, professional and personal opportunities — particularly in areas such as health, education and the public sector where Welsh‑language skills make a real difference.

Sustainability

We are committed to developing Welsh‑medium provision that is realistic, planned and sustainable, recognising our position as a border university and focusing on long‑term impact rather than short‑term gains.

Partnership

CYFLE is built through strong collaboration with partners including Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the National Centre for Learning Welsh and sector bodies, ensuring our work aligns with national priorities and best practice.

Empowerment

Through staff development, Welsh‑in‑the‑workplace pathways and student opportunities, CYFLE empowers people to grow in confidence and use Welsh meaningfully in their professional and academic lives.

Community and Culture

Welsh is a living language rooted in culture and place. CYFLE supports building Welsh‑speaking communities at the University and celebrates Welsh culture locally, nationally and beyond.
