Wrexham University opens new Altitude Laboratory to simulate extreme altitude conditions for athletes

Wrexham University has strengthened its Sport and Exercise Science facilities with the opening of a new Altitude Laboratory, providing students, researchers and athletes with access to specialist performance testing and simulated environmental conditions. 

The laboratory allows users to experience normobaric hypoxia (breathing low‑oxygen air while the surrounding air pressure stays normal), simulating altitudes of up to 5,093 metres above sea level, while temperatures can also be adjusted to between 14°C and 32°C. Equipped with a VO₂max Metalyzer to analyse respiratory gases during exercise, the facility provides a controlled environment for performance testing, physiological research and athlete monitoring. 

The Altitude Laboratory forms part of the University's BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science course, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom theory through practical experience in physiological testing, data interpretation and athlete monitoring. 

Dr Chelsea Batty, Principle Lecturer/Professional Lead Peripatetic Sport, said: "An on-campus altitude laboratory provides sport science students with a unique opportunity to move beyond theory and directly observe how the human body responds to hypoxic exposure. 

"Through hands-on experience, students can develop practical skills in physiological testing, data interpretation and athlete monitoring, enhancing their employability and scientific understanding. 

"In addition, the facility creates opportunities for consultancy and commercial services, allowing athletes, mountaineers and other clients preparing for altitude environments to access evidence-based acclimatisation programmes. 

"This combination of education, research and consultancy ensures the laboratory delivers both academic value and real-world impact." 

Alongside supporting teaching and research, the laboratory will also provide consultancy opportunities for athletes preparing to compete or train at altitude, including mountaineers and endurance athletes, while future plans also include research into heat acclimation and hydration strategies. 

Former Wrexham University Chancellor Colin Jackson CBE, a former world champion hurdler and Olympic silver medallist, has also highlighted the value of altitude training and the opportunities the new facility offers students. 

"People often think altitude training only benefits endurance and distance events, but it can also have a significant effect on sprinting," he said. 

"For us, the speed element of it was important. Having thinner air allowed us to move quicker. There's always those different pay-offs, so yes, altitude training was hugely beneficial." 

Jackson also reflected on how access to altitude facilities has changed since his own athletics career. 

"The chambers nowadays are just fantastic. We had to travel hours. Now it's on your doorstep," he added. 

"What's great about an altitude chamber is that you can absolutely dictate what you want. If you want it to be 28 degrees Celsius and at 2,500 metres because that's the height and temperature you're going to be competing at, it gives you the opportunity to experience that in a way that is really safe because you're being monitored and well looked after." 

Highlighting the benefits for students, he added: "When you're thinking of sports science, you want to have a holistic approach to everything. 

"You want tangible experiences with every element of it. Whether it's world-class athletics, world-class training or world-class facilities, having those opportunities on your doorstep is so important."
