What were you doing before coming to Wrexham University?

Before coming a student in 2024 I was a teaching assistant at a local primary school. I have worked in this role for over 15 years.

What attracted you to Wrexham University?

I felt like I wanted a change of career, so decided to browse the courses at Wrexham University. I was very keen to look further into the Policing, and Criminology and Criminal Justice. I attended an open day, where I met with the course lecturers. I was going to apply the following year, but the lecturers gave me the confidence to just go for it as I had nothing to lose. They made me feel so relaxed and comfortable. Walking around the campus itself gave me a warm feeling of belonging. Everybody is so lovely and kind, the support from the lecturers is fantastic!

How do you think you have benefited from studying at Wrexham University?

I have just finished my 2nd year and now looking forward to going into my final year studying Criminology and Criminal Justice. My favourite modules so far are Crime and Criminal Behaviour, looking at different crimes each week. I have really benefited from the Multi Agency module, this was most valuable for insight into a career within the sector. We were lucky enough to have a few different guest lecturers who are working in the sector at present which was so valuable.

The Criminology, policing and law lecturers are so hands on. Not only this but the opportunities we have had has been invaluable from career fares, guest lecturers, trips to the local prison, scrutiny panel for North Wales Police, and especially the Major Incident Day involving all emergency services. All these experiences, really help your journey towards your career in this field.

Would you recommend undertaking a course with Wrexham University, and why?

If you’re thinking of a career in the Criminal Justice, then Wrexham University will really help you achieve that. I have no regrets and look forward to my future working in the sector.

What have been your career highlights to date?

So far, my time studying at Wrexham University has been such a positive experience for me. As a mature student I have really enjoyed all aspects of the University. I have been given so many opportunities to grow as a person, such as radio interviews, being able to sit on a scrutiny panel for North Wales Police, I now run a Criminology Society to help build my leadership role. My time at Wrexham University has really helped me with my confidence and the courage to believe in myself.
