What were you doing before coming to Wrexham University?

Prior to Wrexham University, I was completing my PhD in Sport and Exercise Science with a keen interest in sport injury prevention and management, therefore the next step to further my career in this area was to pursue a career in Physiotherapy at Wrexham University.

What attracted you to Wrexham University?

Having lived in North Wales my whole life, Wrexham University made sense to me as a mature student. I had also heard great things from previous alumni of the Physiotherapy course at Wrexham, and wanted to not only be able to stay local to the area, but pursue a career in North Wales following graduation. Studying at Wrexham allowed me to network and make invaluable contacts which have since resulted in me achieving my goals as a Sports Physiotherapist.

Tell us a bit about your course

I studied Physiotherapy at Wrexham University, and it was a fantastic experience. The course was really hands-on, which made learning so much more engaging. We covered everything from anatomy and rehabilitation techniques to clinical assessments and patient care. One of the best things was the over 1,000 hours of clinical placement, where we got real-world experience working with patients in hospitals, clinics, and I was fortunate enough to gain experience in a sport setting where I now work. The lecturers were great—knowledgeable and supportive, and many of them are practicing physiotherapists themselves, which made the teaching super relevant.

What was the atmosphere like around campus?

The campus at Wrexham University has such a friendly and welcoming environment. It’s not one of those huge, overwhelming universities where you feel like just another number—it’s a close-knit community where you actually get to know your classmates and lecturers. There’s always something happening, so it was easy to make friends and feel part of the uni.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

For me, the best part of the Physiotherapy course was the practical side of things. It wasn’t just sitting in lectures—we were constantly getting hands-on experience, whether that was learning new treatment techniques, or going out on placement. The placements were invaluable because they gave us real patient experience and a taste of what it’s actually like to work as a physiotherapist in various settings.

What was the support like?

The support at Wrexham University was brilliant. Whether it was academic help, personal support, or just general advice, there was always someone to turn to. The lecturers were really approachable and always happy to answer questions or offer guidance. It truly was an individualised approach for everyone, really taking your personal learning needs and interests into account. It felt like the university actually cared about us as individuals, not just as students.

How do you think you have benefited from studying at Wrexham University?

Studying Physiotherapy at Wrexham University has massively boosted my confidence and skills. The combination of classroom learning and hands-on placements has really prepared me for the real world of physiotherapy. I’ve gained practical experience, built up my knowledge, and developed important skills like problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. On top of that, the university places a big focus on employability, so I felt ready to step into a job straight away. Without Wrexham and the support of the staff, I really would not have had the confidence to apply for my current role as Lead Physiotherapist for the Women and Girls at Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC), which has now led to me being the Physiotherapist for the Welsh Rugby Union Under 18s Women’s team.
