Both the UCAS application and the direct application form require you to state if you have a 'relevant' criminal conviction if you are applying for a course that requires a DBS as it’s condition of entry.

You can view our current Policy & Procedures for DBS Check and Candidates with a Criminal Conviction on our Admissions Policies page.

Courses requiring a DBS check

If you are applying to do a course where a DBS is required, you should select YES if you have ever had a conviction, even if it is spent.

Where indicated in the prospectus or throughout the website, specific programmes/courses may involve regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults, also known as regulated activity. Where this is the case, students will be legally required to undertake a DBS check. The University will send further instructions on undertaking a DBS check as part of the admissions process.

An introduction to the DBS checks can be found here.

The DBS Code of Practice can be found here.

For further guidance please look at the information shown against the programme/course or contact the Admissions and Enquiries Teams.

Criminal Convictions and Recruitment of Ex-Offenders

The University Consideration of Criminal Convictions Policy & Procedure outlines how applicants who declare a criminal conviction(s) are appropriately risk assessed to determine their suitability for admission to the University/placement. The University also has a policy statement on the enrolment of ex-offenders.

DBS ID checks

When you have applied for a DBS check, you will be required to verify your ID. Due to current coronavirus restrictions, ID checks are being undertaken via video call in association with our partners Atlantic Data. You will receive instructions on how to book your video call with Atlantic Data via email, as part of your application process. During this call, you will be required to show ORIGINAL copies of the ID documents you selected when you completed your application. These must be originals - if you do not have the originals you will need to reschedule your appointment.
