Your No-Stress Guide to Preparing for a UCAS Clearing Interview

If you have found out that your chosen Clearing option requires an interview, maintaining a positive mindset and taking a few minutes to prepare will make all the difference. Ultimately, a Clearing interview is no different from any other interview you will attend throughout your future career.
If you approach a Clearing interview like any other conversation about your interests, you won't go far wrong.
Admissions tutors and academic staff aren't looking for a flawless, robotic performance. They simply want to meet the person behind the grades, see your passion for the subject, and make sure the course is the right fit to help you thrive.

Here is your essential guide to going into your Clearing interview feeling calm, prepared, and confident.
1. Do a Little Course Homework
The interview is just as much about you choosing the right university as it is about us choosing the right applicant. Taking 10 or 15 minutes to read through the specific course page beforehand will put you in a fantastic position.
Look out for details like:
- What core modules or subjects will you be covering?
- Are there any hands-on work placements or industry experience opportunities?
- How is the course assessed (e.g., exams, coursework, or practical presentations)?
Showing that you actually know what the degree entails demonstrates strong motivation and excellent preparation qualities every tutor loves to see.
2. Prepare Your Key Examples (and Keep Notes Nearby!)
You are highly likely to face a few standard questions that help the interviewer understand your background. You don't need to memorise a script, but it helps to think about how you would answer these common questions:
- Why do you want to study this specific course?
- What experience or skills do you have that relate to this subject?
- Can you give an example of a challenge you’ve overcome?
Top Tip: If your interview is taking place online or over the phone, take advantage of your environment! Keep a notepad nearby with bullet points of your key achievements, work experience dates, and your qualification details. If your mind goes blank, a quick glance at your notes is completely fine.
3. Practical Steps for a Smooth Interview Day
Eliminating tech stress or travel anxiety is the easiest way to keep your nerves at bay on the day of your Clearing interview.
- If it’s online or by phone: Find a quiet, well-lit space where you won't be interrupted. Check your internet connection and test your microphone and camera at least 15 minutes before your slot.
- Take your time: When a question is asked, it is completely okay to take a breath and pause for a few seconds to gather your thoughts before answering.
- Be honest: If you don't understand a question or didn't hear it properly, simply ask the tutor to rephrase it. They will be happy to do so.
4. Prepare a Question For The Interviewer
At the end of the conversation, the interviewer will almost certainly ask: "Do you have any questions for us?"
Always try to ask at least one question. It shows genuine enthusiasm and flips the dynamic, making it a two-way conversation. You could ask about the academic support available, what past graduates have gone on to do, or even what the campus community is like for a first-year student.
5. Take a Breath. We Want You to Succeed
It is easier said than done, but try to relax. Our Tutors want to welcome enthusiastic, curious students who will bring something unique to the Wrexham University community.
Be proud of the hard work and achievements that have gotten you to this point. Smile, be yourself, and let your genuine interest in the subject carry you through.
